The Bad News:
Research has proven 95% of hair loss in men and women is caused by a condition called androgenetic alopecia. In men, it is described as male pattern baldness, and often progresses to the familiar horseshoe-shaped fringe of hair. In women, female pattern baldness usually takes
the form of thinning over the entire crown of the head.

Normally, hair loss is caused by heredity, hormones or age. In the first case, the tendency to lose hair is passed down through either side of the person's family. Second, in men, hair loss is a result of the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone – a process that results with a certain pre-determined pattern of hair receptive to this hormone – causing hair to be shed gradually and permanently. Lastly, we know, over time,
it is normal to lose a certain amount of hair as you age.

In almost all of these cases, hair loss exhibits itself in
a steady decrease in the size and amount of the hair follicles – a process called miniaturization. That is why
the earlier you seek treatment, the better result you
can expect in reversing this process.

The Good News:
Dr. Kurgis provides all of the safe and approved methods of restoring your hair – surgical hair transplantation, medical and non-medical therapy, and combined treatment options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hair transplantation is the surgical removal of hair-bearing tissue from the area of the sides and back of the head (which is not genetically programmed to be lost), by dividing the "donor" hair into "grafts" or ìfollicular units", which are inserted into tiny sites the doctor makes in
the balding area. Again, because these follicles are not affected by dihydrotestosterone, they will grow for a lifetime.

How do I know this procedure will work for me?
This procedure has been successfully performed in the U.S. for more than 45 years. Dr. Kurgis has performed more than 9500 hair transplant procedures. He has numerous examples of his work and many patient testimonials.

Hair transplantation is as much of an art as it is a science, and Dr. Kurgis is renowned for his attention to detail and naturalness. For many years, he was part of a prestigious hair transplant group, which gave him the opportunity to perform hair transplantation in most metropolitan areas
of the country. As a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons, he regularly attends meeting and scientific workshops to stay up to date
on the advancement of hair transplant techniques
and procedures.

Most important, Dr. Kurgis knows that each hair trans- plant procedure is unique - in terms of the needs of the individual patient and his/her resources. He will take
the time to find out what your expectations are, so as
to provide results to make you feel good about your
hair again!

What should I expect when I inquire about hair restoration with other physicians?
Don't be caught up in jargon and wild claims. All surgeons with the experience and skill demanded by this specialized procedure should be able to provide good results. When a surgeon claims to have some unique, new, or proprietary technique, so your homework!

Ask the questions:
How long has the surgeon been performing hair transplantation? How many patient testimonials can he/she produce for you to see? How many proce dures does the patient perform each year? With who did the surgeon train for hair transplantation (or is he/she
"self-taught?" Is the surgeon a member of the ISHRS
and a diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery?

Also, in a consultation, does the surgeon seem to listen to the results you hope to achieve, or does he/she want to dictate a result for you? Do the patient "before and after" photos reflect natural hairlines? (If you can tell it's a transplant, so can someone else with you!

Is the procedure painful? Sensitivity levels can vary from patient to patient. However, most patients report minimal discomfort. A mild sedative is administered before the scalp area is numbed. Most patients take a
nap or watch television while we work. Afterwards, they tell us that during the procedure they felt no pain. Any discomfort they experience is temporary and minimal.

How much time off work should I expect after
the surgery?

Little or no time off work is required. The areas of skin that underwent the grafts usually take on a slight sunburned appearance. If you are sensitive about how you will look during the days immediately following, you can wear a hat. Hair transplantation is widely considered to be a minor outpatient surgical procedure—one which involves working in the outer-most layers of the skin.
You will be under the care of a board certified skin specialist and qualified medical staff.

Do I want hairs transplanted one-at-a-time?
The follicular unit of the adult human scalp consists of
1–4 terminal (full thickness) hair follicles. Dr. Kurgis transplants hair in the same 'bundle" in which they grew previously. Individual hairs are often best for the frontal hairline and in "transition" zones where bald and hair bearing areas meet. However, density is achieved by placing naturally-occurring follicular groups that will provide the most coverage. Hair "plugs" are a thing of
the past. Naturalness is created through distributing the hair it grows in nature.

Dr. Kurgis positions grafted hair precisely to grow together at the angle and in the direction that closely restores your natural hair pattern. Each patient is individually customized, based on type of hair, age, color and race.

Is hair transplantation limited to the scalp?
No. Hair can be transplanted to other parts of the body. We also specialize in mustache, beard and eyebrow transplantation. Techniques for this restoration are extremely sophisticated. Dr. Kurgis is an expert in replacing lost hair resulting from face lifts, trauma and repairing scarring from brow lifts, camouflaging the remaining area with hair transplants.

How do I know if I'm a good candidate for a
hair transplant?

Only an evaluation with Dr. Kurgis or with his trained
staff can answer this question. An in-person evaluation will allow the doctor to analyze your individual hair loss, hear your expectations and outline your options.

Factors that determine whether you are a good candidate for a transplant include the number of grafted hairs necessary to produce the results you desire, availability and density of "donor" hair, hair color, skin color, hair texture and potential for future hair loss.

Virtually any man or woman who is experiencing some degree of hair loss can be a patient. There are no age limits (our patients generally range from 21-80).

If I am unhappy with a transplant performed by another doctor can Dr. Kurgis correct the problem? Dr. Kurgis performs many cases of corrective hair restoration surgery. He has been an innovator in methods to modify poor transplant work into desirable results.
He lectures on corrective work all over the world.

Can I continue to take Rogaineô and/or Propeciaô with a hair transplant procedure?
Absolutely. Both of these medical treatments can enhance the result of a hair transplant and can help minimize further hair loss.

Also, newly FDA-approved Laser Hair Therapy can be used pre- and post-operatively, to stimulate new hair growth and stop hair loss. This is provided in a location convenient to the surgical office.

What is the cost?
At the time of consultation, you will be given a realistic estimate of the time necessary to achieve your goal, along with a guaranteed cost to you, the patient. If, at
the time of treatment, more hair is transplanted than was estimated, there is no additional charge to the patient. In addition, in order to monitor and oversee the success of the procedure, Dr. Kurgis provides complimentary follow-up appointments every three months for the first year.

Generally speaking, the procedure costs between four
and eight thousand dollars, depending on the amount
of hair transplanted. Easy financing is available at competitive rates. Dr. Kurgis will provide complimentary accommodations for patients traveling over 100 miles
to his offices.
